Michigan City, IN (November 2017) – DEKKER Vacuum Technologies, Inc., the Experts in Vacuum Solutions, congratulates Ron Bogseth on earning his Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) Certification.
Bogseth’s certification will enable him to expand the scope of his current position as Quality Manager to include ensuring compliance with welding codes and contract requirements, conducting welder certifications, and other quality inspection functionalities.
Bogseth said, “The certification is important to DEKKER because it’s important to our customers.” He noted that many of the company’s manufacturing projects require certification that the welding work adheres to strict regulations, such as the codes and standards of the American Welding Society (AWS), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the American Petroleum Institute (API). Previously, DEKKER was required to bring in a third-party CWI company.
Bogseth is also able to certify welders, another proficiency that previously required expensive outsourcing of a third-party CWI. Welder certifications are qualification tests (that must be conducted by a CWI) to determine that the welder can produce a weld that meets a particular code, welding procedure or industry standard.
“Now our customers will have an even greater confidence in the quality control measures we take through every stage of our manufacturing process,” Bogseth said.
CWI Ensures Top-Level Quality
According to the website of the AWS, the CWI program was created in 1976 by the AWS, and is nationally and internationally recognized for ensuring the highest level of quality workmanship.
The AWS says that the job of CWI involves great responsibility and remarkable skill demonstration. A CWI is usually expected to handle qualification records, oversee non-destructive testing, make sure proper materials are available during tests, and more, including:
- Ensuring that all welding work complies with an employer’s safety regulations, as well as the safety regulations stipulated by local, state and federal governments.
- Verifying that Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), building and welding plans, equipment calibration, and welding material documents are correct; helping develop WPSs.
- Inspecting the pre-welding environment, including base and consumable materials; ensuring that cutting methods, joint positions, welder settings, clamp placement and alignment are correct.
- Monitoring the welding process throughout production.
- Conducting inspections of welds, and identifying and supervising repairs.
A Learning Experience that Translates to Customer Benefits
Bogseth credits DEKKER Production Manager Scott Clifford and Fabrication Supervisor Mark Goddard for their efforts to help him bring the certification in-house.
Clifford said, “It’s a significant advantage to have a certified welding inspector at a company of our size. The cost savings are substantial, and it shows our customers that we hold our employees to the highest standards, and that our pumps and vacuum systems are manufactured with unmatched quality for long-term performance.”
DEKKER supported Bogseth in his preparation for the CWI exam, but ultimately, it was his individual effort and commitment that brought success. Clifford said, “It’s an extremely tough course, and Ron passed with flying colors.”
